The Richard A. Henson Family YMCA
Summary
The Richard A. Henson Family YMCA, located on Eastern Boulevard, opened in December, 2001. The 68,000 gsf facility replaced the aging complex on North Potomac Street, providing off street parking, athletic fields, and room for expansion.
Description
Prime features include: an 8,100 sf gymnasium, three (3) racquetball courts with glass endwalls, a 4,800 sf. fitness and weight training room, three (3) multi-program spaces, and five (5) handicap accessible locker facilities, and a child daycare facility. The main lobby contains a vaulted ceiling that draws the entrance canopy further into the building. Skylighting provides ample natural light to the interior space. Earth tones were used throughout the building for a softer finish and a visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
The aquatic facilities consist of a two pool complex with state of the art filtration and sanitation systems. A six lane, 25-yard competitive pool (non-diving) is combined with an independent 30’ x 40’ teaching/therapy pool. The pools are of highly reinforced cast-in-place concrete construction with a ceramic mosaic tile finish. A rollout concrete gutter system with an integral fiberglass grating system provides full perimeter surface skimming for both vessels. All required competitive markings and safety graphics are incorporated in the tile finish.
Filtration is provided by horizontal high rate sand filter systems operating at 4-hour and 2-hour turnover rates respectively. Sanitation is provided via automatic chemical controllers connected to a Calcium Hypochlorite/CO2 delivery system. The pools are operated at two distinct temperatures for competition/exercise and teaching/therapy, 80 to 82 degrees for competition and 84 to 86 degrees for therapy functions. Independent temperatures are maintained utilizing two heat recovery dehumidification systems. Both pools combine to provide the membership with a well-rounded aquatic facility suitable for a wide variety of program opportunities.
