Western Correctional Institution
Summary
Bushey Feight Morin Architects Inc. was awarded the contract to provide full Architectural and Engineering services for the design and construction administration of the 20,100-gsf, formerly, State Use Industries Furniture Shop, which is located within the secured area of the Western Correctional Institution (WCT) compound.
The Furniture Shop is staffed by inmate labor that are trained and employed in the manufacture of veneered and wood furniture for Maryland Correctional Enterprises. The furniture product is then sold to other Maryland State Agencies, State Contractors, and non-profit organizations.
The design required that the A/E Team temporarily isolate the building site located within the secured complex to permit contractor access yet deter inmates from entering the construction area. This was accomplished by creating a series of phased temporary security fence installations and interfaced with demolition of existing fencing in order to isolate the site during the construction day. In the evening, the construction site was re-secured so that the micro wave and intrusion systems could be reactivated in order that the construction area could be monitored by central control.
The building was based upon a pre-engineered building with an 18-ft eave height and was 200-ft by 100-ft with a 100-sf canopy over the loading dock area. The interior of the facility was divided into several areas based upon product furniture construction, finishing, and storage of raw and finished product.
