St. James Dining Hall

Smile Design Centre

Summary

St. James School is a private college preparatory school, boarding students 8 thru 12 grades.  The campus which consists of Georgian Style Architecture and is located three (3) miles south of Hagerstown, Maryland.

Description

The new 16,000 square foot dining hall/refectory/kitchen opened on September 30, 2001, with seating for 294 which can easily be reconfigured to seat 348. Because of this facility, staff and students are now able to dine in one sitting, enabling the school community to associate as a ‘family’.

The new facility features cherry-stained wood paneling, space furnishings, and the gas fireplace is reminiscent of St. Luke’s Refectory. Some additional perks include cherry tables and chairs with a beautiful brick patio overlooking the football field. Wood tone laminate floor, donated by a Board of Trustee member which is as attractive as hardwood but is much more durable and includes the added benefit of softening the sound in the large room.

The refectory is equipped with a 3,200 square foot, modern full service commercial kitchen, making food preparation for larger numbers more efficient. The building also houses the McIntyre Board Room.

Former Business Manager Richard Bettencourt credits Bushey Feight Morin Architects with this design. "The goal was to provide state-of-the-art kitchen facilities and allow for our larger enrollment, while maintaining the integrity of the former dining hall and blending the exterior with the other buildings on campus," he said, "I think the architect did an excellent job of accomplishing these goals."
