Norland Family Practice

Smile Design Centre

Summary

The 9,116 gross square foot Family Medical Practice is a single story slab on grade building organized around a central business office and medical records core with two major wings.

Description

Corridors separate doctor’s offices and business functions from exam rooms and nursing functions. The two corridors are connected on each side of the central core with unobstructed visibility from staffing and control areas. The 2 x 6 wood frame structure is symmetrical in design with a natural stone veneer entrance portico and dutch hip roof. The natural stone veneer extends past the windowsills and is articulated with fiber cement siding.

Environmental systems are designed for energy efficiency and the building envelope is entirely enclosed around a well-insulated shell with 12’ bearing height. The bottom side of the trusses is covered with ½” gypsum board with R-38 fiberglass insulation above. All mechanical equipment and ductwork are encapsulated with this insulated core.

Functional relationships throughout the building were closely designed according to the design parameters established by the two practitioners. Numerous design coordination meetings were conducted between the doctors, staff, architects, engineers, and contractors in a coordinated design/build effort.

Working together from the beginning of the project the Doctors and the Design/Build Team of Brechbill and Helman Construction and BFM Architects were able to design a building commensurate with the program requirements and within the budget for the entire project. Site work on the 1.47-acre site includes parking, sidewalks, storm water management, site lighting, landscaping, and the extension of public utilities to the new building. Vehicle entrance from the street and building orientation were designed for easy access to the parking area and the accessible building entrances.

Automatic sliding entrance doors provide additional accessibility beyond the requirements of ADA guidelines. In addition, 42” wide doors are provided to enter the interior corridors from the large and comfortable waiting room. Wide corridors, larger exam rooms, wide doors to labs, blood drain and treatment rooms and all other aspects of accessible design were provided beyond the minimum requirements.

Interior finishes have been designed to provide patient comfort and representative of warm accommodations. The waiting room is finished in warm wood and stonewalls similar to a mountain lodge. Vernacular forms and finishes are utilized to symbolize the character of the surrounding communities. A warm and comfortable environment is the central theme of this family practice office building.
